Neck liposuction is rapidly gaining momentum as one of the most prominent procedures in the facial plastic surgery industry throughout Canada and abroad. Sometimes, excess fatty deposits can gather in the neck and chin area, giving the appearance that patients are carrying more weight than they actually are. While neck lift procedures are also a viable option, liposuction is a far less invasive procedure that requires a minimal recovery time and comes at a lower cost.
What Is Neck Liposuction?
Neck liposuction is a fantastic minimally invasive way to turn back the clock on aging by removing excess fat deposits that build up around the face and neck. Once the fat is removed, then the neck and chin are contoured and reshaped to create a natural, perfectly smooth and cohesive appearance. People you know will certainly notice an improvement in your appearance, but they’ll be hard-pressed to pinpoint exactly what’s changed. The entire procedure takes about 45 minutes from start to finish and has a relatively short recovery period compared to most other cosmetic procedures.

Who Is an Eligible Candidate for Neck Liposuction?
Eligible candidates for any form of fat liposuction must meet a certain set of criteria as indicated by their plastic surgeon. Most importantly, prospective patients must have realistic expectations of what they can hope to achieve by undergoing this type of procedure. Reputable physicians should refuse to operate on patients who desire to emulate the look of another person, including celebrities. Before you can even commence any form of medical or surgical cosmetic treatment, your physician should schedule a consultation with you to ascertain that you’re going into it with the right frame of mind. Furthermore, they will typically only recommend liposuction if you have an extensive buildup of fat deposits around your neck and chin area.
What Can Neck Liposuction Accomplish?
Ultimately, the end result will be slightly different for each patient. Younger patients tend to have greater elasticity in their skin and will most likely only require a single treatment to remove excess fat deposits. Older patients, on the other hand, will most likely need additional follow-up treatments to help maintain their new appearance over longer stretches of time. The main goal of undergoing a neck liposuction procedure is to contour the bottom half of the face and define the jawline as much as possible.
What Does Neck Liposuction Entail?
As mentioned, neck liposuction is a very short procedure that won’t take up more than an hour of your time. However, you should arrange to have someone available to drop you off and pick you up from the clinic after your procedure as you may be required to go under general or local anesthesia depending on your pain tolerance. Most patients fair well under local anesthesia, though.
At the beginning of the procedure, your plastic surgeon will first inject a tumescent solution into your neck and chin area. This solution both numbs the area and forces the fat deposits to become inflamed so that they break apart and are easier to identify and remove. Due to constriction of the blood vessels, this solution also reduces the amount of bleeding that occurs over the course of the procedure. Once the area is sufficiently numbed, the next step is to insert the cannula (a thin tube that’s used to further break down and remove the fat cells) and start suctioning the fat deposits.
Immediately following the procedure, patients will require an additional period of 15 minutes to half an hour to recuperate from the physical trauma. During this time, you plastic surgeon should be preparing written instructions that you’ll need to follow over the next few days in order to maximize your recovery time.
What Can Be Expected throughout the Recovery Period?
Most patients experience a very limited recovery period in the aftermath of a neck liposuction procedure. In fact, you should be able to return to work within three to four days after the procedure. For the first few days, however, you’ll need to have someone stay with you to help you with simple tasks such as grooming, personal hygiene, changing your clothes, etc. You also need to refrain from any exhaustive physical activities for a minimum of two to three weeks to allow the wound to heal properly and prevent it from stretching or reopening. Unfortunately, this includes going to the gym and playing sports. In some cases, your plastic surgeon may also prescribe pain medications to help alleviate any discomfort you may feel throughout the healing process. Also, you will notice some residual bruising around the affected area for the first few weeks—this is perfectly normal.
Are the Results Permanent or Temporary?
Typically, the results of neck liposuction are permanent as long as the patient maintains a healthy lifestyle and overall weight. However, there are certainly exceptions to every rule and not every patient may experience the same results. As mentioned, younger patients will ultimately require fewer and less aggressive treatments than patients of more advanced ages due to the natural loss of elasticity in their skin. Part of the reason for undergoing this procedure is to enhance and restore the skin’s natural springiness. An experienced and reputable plastic surgeon should be able to determine whether or not you’ll require multiple treatments based on the quality and age of your skin.
