What is Eyelid Lift
Surgery?
Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic or medical procedure that’s designed to correct and smooth out skin conditions surrounding the eye. It can be performed on the upper or lower eyelid depending on the needs and requests of the patient. More often than not, patients prefer to undergo upper and lower eyelid lift surgery simultaneously to address all of their needs in a single session.
Upper Blepharoplasty
Upper blepharoplasty is the ideal procedure for treating droopy, uneven, and puffy eyelids. While these aren’t strictly medical conditions, excess skin on your eyelids can impede your vision and hinder the functionality of your eye. On top of that, it can also make you look much older than you are by giving you a tired appearance.
An upper blepharoplasty (or eyelid lift) involves making a small incision along the upper eyelid line. Excess fat is then removed, the skin is pulled back and tightened to give your face a smoother complexion. Once the doctor closes the incision site with dissolvable sutures, you will need to stay in the clinic for a few hours for further observation.
Lower Blepharoplasty
The same basic principles apply to lower blepharoplasty, except for the fact that there are two equally effective techniques that can be used. Depending on your preferences and Dr. Gantous’ recommendations, you can either opt for transconjunctival or transcutaneous blepharoplasty.
The former entails making the incision directly on the inside of the lower eye line to minimize the risk of visible scarring. The latter entails making the incision beneath the lower lash line.
If performed simultaneously, upper and lower eyelid surgery can take anywhere from 2-3 hours and can be done under either a local or general anesthetic. Dr. Gantous, a renowned Blepharoplasty surgeon in Toronto, will explain the differences and indications of these procedures and what best suits you.

Eyelid Lift FAQ
Blepharoplasty is the ideal cosmetic procedure for anyone who wants to improve their overall facial structure, reduce the signs of aging around the eyes, and eliminate a droopy or overhanging eyelid. Whether you’re looking to correct a medical or cosmetic issue concerning your eyelids, an eyelid lift could be the right solution for you.
Ideal candidates should be at least in their mid-20s to early 30s and in excellent health. Smokers should consider quitting, preferably permanently, or on a temporary basis approximately one to two weeks prior to surgery to facilitate a faster and more effective recovery period. You should also understand that in some cases, droopy eyelids and premature wrinkle development are hereditary conditions and not necessarily a result of lifestyle or certain habits. Dr. Gantous can discuss any necessary and helpful lifestyle changes you can make to prevent your wrinkles from returning.
In this case, the term “eyelid lift” is a misnomer because nothing is actually being lifted. Rather, excess fat and skin cells are being redistributed or removed entirely to achieve a smoother, younger looking appearance.
In some cases, if your eyes look sunken, Dr. Gantous may even extract a small amount of fat from other parts of your body and inject it into the upper or lower eyelid to give it a little more volume. The idea is to create a symmetrical and balanced appearance so that both eyes look equally healthy, youthful and radiant.
>With that in mind, you should talk with Dr. Gantous about your specific goals so that he can make appropriate suggestions. Remember to keep your expectations realistic; you should never go into a procedure like this with the expectation that you’re going to look like someone else.
Before you make the decision to undergo blepharoplasty, it’s important to anticipate what the recovery period and aftercare treatment will be like. With any cosmetic procedure, making an informed decision is at least half the battle so there are no surprises throughout the process. Always be completely forthcoming with your plastic surgeon by telling them if you’ve been diagnosed with any specific medical conditions and give them a full list of all of the medications and vitamins that you’re taking.
It can take several weeks to fully recover from blepharoplasty, and even longer if you’ve undergone double eyelid lift surgery. During that time, you need to keep your head straight and elevated constantly and refrain from any strenuous physical activities such as sports or high intensity workouts. Even though eyelid lift surgery is an outpatient elective procedure, it’s always advised that you have someone pick you up from the clinic, as your vision may be slightly impaired for a few hours. You will also experience some minor bruising, redness, inflammation, and temporary scarring around the incision sites as they heal. This should all begin to subside within the first week or so. To reduce the swelling around your eyes, you can apply an ice pack intermittently within the first 24-48 hours. After about 24 hours, you should be able to get out of bed. It’s important to have someone around the house to help you with menial tasks.
